Mujeres a la Mar: Stories that make artisanal fishing possible

The mini-documentary was produced as part of the Por la Pesca project, which promotes formal and responsible fishing practices, as well as gender equity in the sector.

The artisanal fishing sector is traditionally male; however, the presence of women in fishing stands out especially in pre- and post-catch activities. Without them, it would not be possible for fish and seafood to reach consumers’ tables. Their stories are part of the great productive chain, which impacts not only their communities but also the national economy. The mini-documentary Mujeres a la Mar (Women to the Sea), promoted by the Por la Pesca project, brings together the testimonies of several women artisanal fishing leaders who share their experiences and the challenges they have had to face in the sector.

Mujeres a la Mar has been recorded in Lambayeque, Piura and Lima, under the voice of Lucía Fiestas, manager of San Josefinas Emprendedoras; Nicolasa Ypanaqué, manager of Joyas del Mar; Elsa Vega, president of the Sociedad Nacional de Pesca Artesanal; and Susy Querevalú, owner of a fishing boat (shipowner). This production also reveals the challenges they have faced since they began working in the fishing sector, as well as the roles they currently play in their work.
