Sustainable Cities

SPDA

Cities are in constant expansion, but the urban growth is messy and does not consider the opportunities that the connection with nature can offer to promote human wellbeing and access to resources. In this sense, we are working for the right of everyone to live in habitable cities, to improve the quality of the environment from which people’s and other beings’ health and wellbeing depend.

At the SPDA, we consider essential to devise a path for the construction of sustainable cities. This should start with a framework legislation defining a sustainability approach for the cities, and which guarantees better conditions of human development, recognizing our diversity. This legislation should also create the conditions for a greater, inclusive urban resilience for a decent life, reducing the gaps of inequality and strengthening the values of an active citizenship.

The following are some of our key actions:

  • We work for the defense of citizen rights through the legal protection of public spaces.
  • We promote the sustainable management of solid waste through legal contributions to the current regulations and handling citizen cases, advocating with public entities in charge.
  • We work with public agencies, such as the Ministry of the Environment, in the mitigation of the impact of plastic in the country through international agreements.
  • We research in order to produce inputs for decision makers regarding urban and rural planning.

As a result of our work, we have actively participated in the elaboration of the bill on Public Spaces and its regulations, which were passed in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
